Walther Flemming (1843-1905) is certainly one of the most important early cytologists. As all his colleagues in Germany (and some others) did at the time, he wrote exclusively in German. If you do not understand German, you might still be intrigued by the beauty of the plates ("Tafeln" in German) that he drawed. You can download them below in the pinkish field. If you do understand enough German to read Flemming, you also will understand my further explanations below. See bottom of the page for links to English web-sites about Flemming.

Walther Flemming (1843-1905) ist sicher einer der bedeutendsten frühen Zellbiologen. Das hier in Teilen wiedergegebene Buch wird allgemein als Flemmings Hauptwerk betrachtet. Wenige Jahre zuvor führte er den Begriff "Chromatin" für die anfärbbare Substanz im Kern ein. Hier legt er detailiert seine Forschungsergebnisse dar, geht dabei aber auch auf seine Vorgänger ein.
